Risk warning: automated forex trading
Please read this page carefully before you decide anything. We've written it in plain English because we want you to understand exactly what you're getting into.
Your capital is at risk. Forex trading carries a high level of risk and is not suitable for everyone. You could lose some or all of the money you put in. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Only trade with money you can afford to lose.
You can lose some or all of your money
Trading foreign exchange (forex) involves buying and selling currency pairs, such as AUDCAD. Prices move constantly and can move against you quickly. The value of your trading account can go down as well as up, and you may get back less than you put in — or nothing at all.
Only use money you can afford to lose
The money in your trading account should be money you could lose without it affecting your day-to-day life. Please do not use:
- money you need for bills, rent, mortgage payments or living costs;
- your emergency savings;
- pension savings or money set aside for retirement income;
- borrowed money, including credit cards or loans.
Leverage magnifies losses as well as gains
Forex accounts are usually traded on margin (leverage). This means a small price movement can have a large effect on your account balance — in either direction. Your broker will explain the leverage and margin rules that apply to your account. Please read your broker's own risk disclosures carefully.
Automated does not mean risk-free
Our strategy follows a fixed set of rules. That removes emotional decision-making, but it does not remove market risk. Every strategy has losing trades, and there will be losing weeks and losing months. Unusual market events, low liquidity, price gaps (for example over weekends or around major news), slippage, broker outages or technical problems can all lead to losses that are larger than expected.
How a grid strategy can lose money
Our strategy is an automated grid on one currency pair, AUDCAD. When price moves against the open trades, it opens more trades, and later trades can be larger (a martingale-style approach). So when the market keeps moving one way, losses on the open trades can grow faster than the price move and add up quickly. These losses can be large, and in a strong or sudden move they can lead to the loss of all the money in your account. A high number of winning trades in the past does not mean the next losing period will be small.
Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results
Any results we publish show what happened in the past. They are not a reliable indicator of what will happen in the future. Market conditions change, and a strategy that performed one way in the past may perform differently later.
Your choice of risk level matters
A higher risk level means larger position sizes, which can lead to bigger swings in your account — including bigger losses. A lower level reduces trade size relative to your account. It doesn't prevent losses, and drawdowns can still be large, including total loss of your capital. If you're unsure, speak to an independent financial adviser. You can review your choice at any time.
